Laika is the project that Margaret Fiedler chose to begin after leaving Moonshake back in '93. Named for the first dog in space, Laika was a similarly strange animal. Like her previous band, Laika chose to incorporate a multitude of genres onto one slab of vinyl. Dub rhythms, soul-jazz, tight percussion and atonality all come together in a subdued, atmospheric way. With their debut Silver Apples of the Moon, they managed to predate the studio engineered, genre-hopping, DJ-inspired ingenuity of albums like Odelay or Fantasma. Laika's music has been a continually adventurous foray into Krautrock roots and rhythms that maintains a staid, forward outlook for new sounds.
