Fairchild entered the Nashville machine as a songwriter and got signed as an artist based on her exceptionally strong vocals. She had numerous chart hits in the 1970s, and her reedy, soprano voice was surrounded by strings and all the other trappings of the Nashville Sound. After an attempt at retirement in the 1980s, she came back to music as a Gospel singer.
