A singer-songwriter with a Southern sensibility and a country-tempered rock 'n' roll streak, Snider has built a strong cult following through a combination of his smart songwriting and heavy touring. Snider was "discovered" by Jimmy Buffett and subsequently signed to Buffett's label. He gained no small amount of exposure opening for Buffett concerts, but there is really very little similarity between the two artists -- Snider's work is closer to a combination of Billy Joe Shaver and John Prine. His songs can be wryly funny, but more often than not they have an underlying seriousness to them. His sound is a lean blend of country and rock, with traces of Bluegrass and R&B.
