Perla Batalla's clear, powerful voice recalls a young Linda Ronstadt, another singer who has never forgotten her Mexican heritage. Batella's musical explorations take on a different form than those of Ronstadt, however -- instead of genre-hopping, she combines folk and pop music from both the U.S. and Mexico into her own seamless style. She's earned critical kudos for her mix of Joan Baez folk, Bonnie Raitt soul, and k.d. lang intensity, all of which come together in her stirring, original songs.
