When this Placerville, Calif., power trio toured with Cake, they actually sold more merchandise than the aforementioned headliner. This could be partly due to the fact that the band write such great songs that they don't need anyone on a major label to "go the distance" for them in high-end radio promotion. The music here clearly speaks for itself. Led by gritty-voiced Singer-Songwriter Rusty Miller, Jackpot's songs soar in passionate laments and whiskey-pickled anthems that seem to stem from the fever of a soul born on the road. Jackpot's rich, twangy tones come together in three parts so naturally, that the band's obvious chemistry is tangible to the listener. No surprise -- they've been playing together since they were in elementary school. Jackpot are one of California's most underrated bands with a following and future that would give any A&R vulture insta-cred just for signing them. They mix Power Pop and Roots rock together in an unpredictable, innovative, and honest crossover style. Miller's well crafted songs contain intricately organic guitar leads and witty arrangements that are both hypnotizing and prodigious.
