Nnenna Freelon's latest work finds her interpreting standards and generation-old material, as well as contributing some original compositions. Her voice has been compared to Sarah Vaughan in its flexible alto range and rich timbre. She possesses near-uncanny control over her vibrato, and improvises melodic alterations and filigrees that will make you shiver! Her sense of dynamics, is impeccable, as she rides the band to cathartic climaxes. Dick Oatts joins her on saxophone, turning in some electrifying Post-Bop playing that at times recalls such masters as George Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Henderson. And her band, which features Herbie Hancock on piano, is stellar.
