(b. ?Elsted, ? bap. 25 Oct 1576; d. London, bur. 1 Dec 1623).
English composer. He was organist at Winchester College (1598- c. 1602) and then Chichester Cathedral. He took the Oxford BMus in 1602 and may have been a member of the Chapel Royal. After his temporary dismissal from Chichester for drunkenness (1617), he spent time in London. A leading church composer and gifted madrigalist, he produced ten services, over 35 anthems, nearly 100 madrigals (4 bks, 1597-1608) and a little consort music. His best works are noted for their brilliant counterpoint and inventive textual imagery; they include the well-known sacred madrigal When David heard, As Vesta was, from Latmos Hill descending (in The Triumphes of Oriana, 1601), Thule, the period of cosmographie and the remarkable O care thou wilt dispatch mee.
