Begun as a side solo project for Red Red Meat guitarist Tim Rutili, Califone and its ever-changing lineup sacrifice the straightforward approach of earlier RRM material for a more cerebral variety of collage-style work. With textured grooves and dissonant, yet dreamy melodies, Califone create beautiful and entrancing material. Asked to describe the songs, Rutili himself offers a vision which may help you along or send you running: "...gossip and the old ladies at a wedding in a community of houseboats stuck in the mud. Two old aunts get caught making out in a bathroom and they have all been waiting for it to rain again, while all the boats are rotting and the beach keeps getting farther and farther away.
