Sphere are one of the few jazz supergroups around. Kenny Barron, Charlie Rouse, Buster Williams and Ben Riley first got together in 1982 to honor the music of Thelonious Monk. Gary Bartz later replaced Rouse on saxophone when the group reunited in the late '90s. Their timeless Bop lies just east of Charlie Haden's Quartet West.
