Shiner probably hate being put into the Emo category, since they are so much more aggressive than the rest of that genre. But since Shiner was one of the first, they could perhaps be deemed Pre-Emo. In retrospect however, Shiner could have been considered a Post-Grunge band. But you have to remember that when they emerged Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were clouding sensibilities. Weighed against those two, not only was their sound welcome in the Indie world, it was considered "refreshing" enough to get its own tag, Emo. The music of Shiner is dynamically jagged, the guitars pulse to and fro and the words, the basis for the Emo tag, are, uh, emotive. Shiner should be recognized as a pioneer of sorts, developing a sound that now rests somewhere between the Brit Pp leanings of today and the Grunge Rock of yesterday. Brilliant!
