The Japanese-American pop star's first English-language album is a gem: serious, wordy, never as easy as you think it should be, and pervaded by the fraternal twins of urgency and fun. From the angular post-rock guitars on "Devil Inside" to "Animato"'s Madonna-in-a-carnival sound, this marks the debut of an unusual talent.
