Review Paul Desmond was a major reason for the success of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and this boxset proves that the music he made as a group leader was just as wonderful. Desmond's sly, witty but emotionally rich sax style does marvels with strings, the Bossa Nova, ballads and a few swingers. Guitarist Jim Hall and drummer Connie Kay sound just as good as Desmond.
