Geri Halliwell, everybody's favorite one-time Turkish game show hostess and former Spice Girl, is shaping up to be a formidable solo star. She's got the charisma, the looks, and the right attitude -- it may be hard work, but she makes it look fun. Halliwell also has a brassy, if underdeveloped vocal style which she uses in the same way as the ultimate Spice Woman, the saucy Shirley Bassey. Halliwell seems to be having a ball shouting out lyrics such as "Look at me / I'm your fantasy," even as baby-boomer parents are left wondering exactly how all this is supposed to be "girl empowering." Yet while Halliwell doesn't have the top talent of Bassey or Ann-Margret, she displays the same interest in a broad variety of styles. Like her mentor, the pre-Lourdes Madonna, she'll try anything once. It just remains to be seen if Halliwell's career will prosper long enough for her to attempt everything she wants to.
