Excellent, female-oriented modern folk. This is Folk-Rock at its best, far removed from the drifting, waif-like vocals and anemic guitars that are so determinedly oozing through a lot of female-oriented music these days. Ellen Rosner's voice is on par with Joan Armatrading's -- it's deep, unapologetic and almost prophetic in its sense of conviction. Her lyrics live up to her thundering vocals: ironic and self-aware, Rosner's self-criticism is sharp without being biting, and her commentary embraces its subjects with humor and intelligence. The acoustic accompaniment is thick and polished, with rich guitars that surge forward, invigorating the song rather than pooling somewhere near the beginning.
