Review Voices On The Verge is one of those rare ideas that works even better in practice than on paper: Take four up-and-coming female singer/songwriters, put them in a room together with some acoustic guitars and turn on the tape recorder. This disc joins Beth Amsel's graceful, soul-deep flutter (best showcased on "Long Island Sound"), Rose Polenzani's slightly unhinged folkie viscera (captured on "Heaven Release Us"), Erin McKeown's jazzy scat-singing ("Blackbirds") and Jess Klein's dulcet, soaring vibrato ("Little White Dove"). The disc is not merely… Read More a round robin --the women sing and play on each other's songs, expanding one another's styles (such as McKeown's funky acoustic strum on Polenzani's aching "You Don't Know"). Best of all, Voices On The Verge contains no annoying "tenacious diva" competitiveness; it's a level forum that showcases the best of what these women have to offer and lets hidden talents (Klein's clarinet, McKeown's accordion) emerge. This is real grrrl power, baby. MEREDITH OCHS (October 02, 2001)
