architect of textures and densities. His musical conception involves a totality of sound in which his open-pedal piano resonates with various other instruments, especially percussion. Smith's band, the Cosmic Echos, features the African percussion of Mtume and the Indian percussion of Badal Roy, both of whom are also featured with Miles. George Barron sounds strong in his recording debut, his saxophone lines furnishing the essential lead voice around which Smith creates his swirling spirals.
Astral Traveling is supremely lyrical and irresistibly hypnotic. Such calming, peaceful music is hard to find these days and the pianist's further explorations are eagerly awaited. (RS 163)
