Review What is the sound of romance? Is it a quietly impassioned pledge of devotion? A lushly harmonized "I love you"? Or an acrobatic male voice soulfully insisting, "Let me make you soakin' wet, baby"?If you chose the third, you're precisely the listener Silk had in mind for Lose Control. From the "Your sex has got it goin' on" chant that opens "Happy Days" to the "Let me lick you up and down" refrain in "Freak Me," the album is less an attempt at make-out music than a collection of how-to tunes. But unlike the nasty-as-they-wanna-be… Read More raunch of the 2 Live Crew, Silk couches its salacious intent in what is meant to pass as the language of love in other words, promises of foreplay before getting down to the nasty. Yet as implausible as the approach may look on paper, it's surprisingly convincing when set to music particularly this music. As overseen by producer Keith Sweat, Silk's sound offers an ingenious blend of soul-harmony finesse and New Jack rhythmic aggression, so that even the group's slowest jams deliver a bass-thumping kick. Better still, the quintet's vocal strengths are such that there's almost no need for Sweat's cameo on "Happy Days" any one of these guys seems more than capable of carrying a melody on his own. Still, not even Silk's well-sung harmonies are enough to distract from the fact that all this group really has to say is "Let's fuck." Some of us expect a little more out of love songs. (RS 657) J.D.
