Review Folk singer/guitarist Peter Mulvey honed his craft as a busker in Dublin and Boston, and his eighth album Kitchen Radio is redolent of relentless travel. In a voice lush and hushed that occasionally sinks into a whisper, Mulvey sings of the "open road that wants you gone" ("Shirt"), as well as footsteps, airplanes, endless cups of coffee and faces that hover around him like ghosts only to vanish. Mulvey's imagery is made all the more haunting by his guitarist/co-writer David Goodrich, whose sundry string bending ranges from loose ramblings… Read More around the neck on the instrumental "Bloomington" to freeform explorations that recall John Scofield on the atmospheric "You." Mulvey saves the best for last, though: "Sad, Sad, Sad, Sad" is a Celtic-tinged surrealistic beauty ("Your voice on the phone is like one of those paintings/where everything loses its shape") in 3/4 time with gorgeous harmonies from labelmate Kris Delmhorst.
