Review Nicolai Dunger's new album Tranquil Isolation plays more like that of an backwoods Kentuckian than an oddball Swede, thanks in no small part to co-producers, brothers Will and Paul Oldham, who invited Dunger to their native Louisville to record. Dunger's lonely, pained voice -- part Rufus Wainwright and part Van Morrison -- stands as the lead instrument, as he wails about mamas, nannies, love and his baby. The singer-songwriter dips into and conquers a distinct and structured blues tradition, evident from his opening line, "Last night I dreamt… Read More of Mississippi." Dunger and the Oldhams texture the songs with violin, piano and harmony, adding a richness and a softness that matches Will Oldham at his most captivating. Tranquil Isolation is a glowing collection of down-home shimmer. BENJAMIN FRIEDLAND (March 25, 2003)
