Review Jeffrey Osborne's deep, sonorous voice was the soul of LTDa fact that became totally apparent on Love Magic, that band's first record without him. In contrast to LTD's lackadaisical LP, Osborne's dèbut solo album, produced by George Duke, is smooth and assured, a solid introduction to an exceptional singer.Osborne, who cowrote eight of the album's ten songs, has marvelous technical control: during the ballad "On the Wings of Love," he is lush and romantic; on "I Really Don't Need No Light," he sounds suspicious and chagrined;… Read More and as he navigates the descending melody line of "Eenie Meenie," he's totally in control. Throughout the LP, Duke cradles Osborne in effervescent, danceable midtempo grooves. The album's one flaw is the lack of a killer ballad like "Love Ballad" or "Where Did We Go Wrong?"LTD songs that elicited Osborne's most powerful performances. Still, that problem doesn't lessen Osborne and Duke's overall achievement. This is a quality album and, one hopes, the first of many from Jeffrey Osborne. (RS 379) NELSON GEORGE |
