Review This New York chanteuse has been favorably compared by her devoted cult to Streisand and Piaf. Unwisely so. Though Olivor puts over a ballad with the edge of hysteria common to these women, she lacks Streisand's chutzpah and Piaf's resilience and the vocal stamina that goes with them. Olivor virtually sobs Rogers and Hammerstein's "Some Enchanted Evening" like a stagestruck waif, without using a pinch of the irony that might have contemporized such a saccharine warhorse. On the lighter side, "L'Important C'est la Rose," a charming little cabaret… Read More song, cannot sustain. Olivor's serloso histrionics. Her greatest mistakeone many young cabaret performers make todayis to treat pop as grand opera's immediate offshoot and to overemote accordingly. (RS 223) STEPHEN HOLDEN |
