This superb, complex mystery/anti-war movie alienated American fans who had been won over by Amelie's whimsy. Angelo Badalamenti -- who previously worked on the same director's City of Lost Children -- has crafted a mesmerizing score that alternates between lush romance and creeping dread. He's easily one of the finest composers working in modern movies.
