Review
A.R.E. Weapons perform in art galleries, pick fights with fans and wear retro-geek chic designer clothes, yet they swear they're not part of New York's vaunted electroclash/art-punk/dance scene. If Fischerspooner are the kabuki-makeup-wearing, high-concept belles of that ball, Matt, Brain and Paul Weapons sound like the trust-fund junkie ex-boyfriend who only comes around when he wants to nick your stereo. The trio brings a tweaker attitude to the hedonistic death disco sound, a post-apocalyptic Beastie Boys-meet-Jim Carroll groove built on overdriven… Read More vintage drum machines and keyboards, joy buzzer guitars and street hassle fables. Songs like "A.R.E." blitz by on fractured, jittery beats and spastic, digital hardcore-style rapping, but the party at ground zero vibe is summed up on the Suicide-meets-Andrew W.K. banger "Don't Be Scared." Eschewing cerebral language, Brain deadpans, "Dude, that's cool/It's fuckin' awesome/Life is meant to be awesome." When he's not "dusted," which he often is, Brain's ripping off Lou Reed, as in the tweaked street hustler anthem "Fuck You, Pay Me," which nicks a few lines from "Walk on the Wild Side." Brain sings, "Gotta get my money right, so I can get my kicks." Call it gutter glam. GIL KAUFMAN
