Manchester's smooth, Karen Carpenter-like voice was a familiar sound on AM radio in the 1970s and an even more familiar sound on mainstream AAA formatting in the '80s. From the first hit "Don't Cry Out Loud," to her Grammy-winning '80s fare (soundtrack songs and largely unmemorable but enduring MOR), Manchester has been a mainstay of female pop vocalists, and never strayed too far from the upper ecehlons of her genre.
