Both barrels are cocked when Sammy steps in front of Basie's roaring big band. Quincy Jones' hard-driving arrangements burn bright on such smashing jazz-protest classics as "Work Song" and "Blues for Mister Charlie" (about slavery's legacy). This displays the finger-snapping Davis at his best (and "best" is the only state Basie ever knew).
