Best known for her Adult Contemporary hit, "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" in 1992, Hawkins has made a name for herself as an original songwriter unwilling to follow music industry protocol. The cleverness and originality of her arrangements aren't immediately noticeable, which might explain why her songs are rarely hits upon release. It generally takes a bit of time for folks to realize there's much more below the surface. Needless to say, fans of Hawkins' ornate and often eclectic folk-pop tend to be much more devoted than one would expect in the Adult Contemporary world.
