Review
As the frontman for Living Colour, Corey Glover was instrumental in reaffirming that "black rock" isn't a contradiction in terms. But on his solo debut, Hymns (produced by the Family Stand and executive-produced by Antonio Reid and Babyface), Glover's commitment to carving out new rock territory has waned. There are traces of his former adventurousness – the headbanging of "Do You First, Then Do Myself," the gospel metal of "Sermon" – but most of Hymns travels a more self-consciously alterna-soul route, with mixed, often… Read More directionless results. Though Glover's voice is as theatrically versatile as ever, his songs can get overblown and mired in R&B cliché. Only on the more understated balladry of "One," "Silence" and the Princely "April Rain" does he actually give us what the album's title promises: modern-day praise songs that find hope and faith in the smallest of gestures.
