REDMAN,DEWEY Vinyl Records and CDs
Somehow he's been generally ignored in favor of his many contemporaries -- as well as his son Joshua -- but Redman's importance and skill as a soloist shine through in his recordings. Equally able to improvise freely in a noisy setting with Ornette Coleman, or to render a ballad smoothly, Redman knows how to reign in his slashing lines when needed, rolling through Bebop changes or soaring into a Coltrane-like frenzy. His thick tone on the tenor sax has been quite influential, helping to shape the Free Jazz movement in seminal groups such as Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. The focus on his son in recent years has begun to bring the elder Redman into view, and hopefully he will gain the respect he rightly deserves as one of the most innovative players to come out of the 1960s and '70s.
