New York City Ballet is one of the leading dance companies in the world, founded in 1948 by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. Kirstein met Balanchine in London in 1933 and invited him to travel to States, where the two opened the School of American Ballet. In 1946 they formed Ballet Society and presented their performance at the City Center of Music and Drama in New York. Few years later they officially joined the performing arts center with their newly established ballet company. Jerome Robbins started working with NYCB in 1949 and helped to build the outstanding repertory and establish the Company in New York.
In 1964, New York City Ballet moved into its current home at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater. The performances are accompanied by New York City Ballet Orchestra.
