Ireland's angry and brooding young man, Cathal Coughlan spent the 1980s with Sean O'Hagen in Microdisney. During the '90s, he went on to lead the equally confrontational, but more abrasive, Fatima Mansions. Coughlan's cinematically folky solo work is more narrative and less political in nature than his past work, but it's still steeped in Catholic (and often violent) imagery. His new story-songs are compelling and his deceptively rich string arrangements complement the subject matter perfectly. This will find favor with fans of Nick Cave and Tom Waits.
