Barbara Montgomery may be based in Philadelphia, but she gets the femme fatale, 1950s Cool jazz, "Moon and Sand" vibe just right. The mood here is vintage Chet Baker, June Christy and Julie London -- doomed romanticism for beautiful losers. Montgomery even has the good taste to share the limelight with her dreamy band. Horn player Bob Mershey has plenty of room to explore and build on his solos, which are both introspective and searing. Good mix of standards, jazz perennials, and original numbers -- all sung with icy, fatalistic precision.
