C 817 Johann Nepomuk Hummel was considered by his contemporaries as one of the greatest musicians of the era;he was held in high esteem by his teacher Mozart, by his mentor Haydn, and by later Romantic composers such as Chopin, Schumann and the likes. His chamber music output is not particularly numerous, but highly interesting, as is documented by the works for flute and piano recorded in this Da Vinci Classics album. It includes his D-major Sonata for Flute and Piano, op. 50, the A-major Sonata (also playable on the violin), op. 64, and the youthful but remarkable G-major Sonata, authored by a barely teenage composer. By way of contrast, the Grand Rondeau Brillant op. 126 is a perfect expression of its composers mature years, with his idiomatic blend of brilliancy and unforgettable lyrical melodies. The album is completed by transcriptions after excerpts from Hummels opera Mathilde von Guise.
