Funkytown is a tour through triumph and tragedy of aspiring rock stars from Minneapolis. As this rockumentary travels into the experiences of working musicians, a fascinating slice of American life and the Rock ‘n’ Roll world emerges .. STEVEN GREENBERG DIRECTOR OF FUNKYTOWN

Musician and film director Steven Greenberg surveys the Minneapolis music scene in this documentary. The film's title derives from a tune Greenberg recorded in 1980. Concerts and interviews provide coverage of five bands, including the touring Delilahs, the alternative soul group Greazy Meal, Found, Tina and the B-Side Movement, and peace-promoting white Rastafarian Iya, who became a murder victim during a robbery. Shown at the 1998 Santa Barbara Film Festival.
Steven Greenberg has turned his creativity into a lifetime career by wearing many hats in the entertainment and graphic design industries. A successful producer/songwriter in the 1980's, he is the founder and CEO of an Internet design firm called Designstein and also owns the recording facility Funkytown Studios, the independent record label October Records, and an independent film production company called Drummer Boy Pictures – all located in Minneapolis. Greenberg is a native of St. Paul where he attended high school and played drums in a local rock group. After high school, he invented and leased a portable disco system called the "Discomobile" which gave him the opportunity to earn a living doing something he loved. He attended the University of Minnesota where he studied Fine Arts. Greenberg is best known for penning the international pop hit "Funkytown" in 1980, one of the largest-selling singles in the history of PolyGram Records. Working under the moniker Lipps, Inc., Greenberg went on to record four albums for Casablanca/PolyGram and to produce records for several other Minneapolis artists. In 1991, he established Designstein whose many clients include Redmond Aussie Hair Care Products, 3M Corporation, Minnesota Film Board, Carlson Travel Network, and the University of Minnesota. October Records was launched in 1993 as a small, independent record company. It was Greenberg's way of reinvesting in the Twin Cities music scene by grooming local bands for major label contracts. October has had great success with the Delilahs, The Honeydogs and Willie Wisely, among others. Also in 1993, Greenberg built Funkytown Studios. Even though Greenberg has spent his adult life in the music business, he has always carried a love and respect for film. He often dreamed of making a film which portrayed the real life of a musician. FUNKYTOWN is his directorial debut.
Indie REVIEW :: The stories behind working musicians, "Funkytown" should be a staple for anyone thinking about getting into the music business. And the music... unbelievable! I went to a screening of Funkytown at my college with a group of musician friends. You always see the glamorous musicians life in Hollywood movies. This movie tells it like it is, r
