"A cornerstone of Fricsay's repertoire, the honestly of this reading is further enhanced by the absence of star singers: these four work as a team with no untoward histrionics or excessive vibrato. Made at a turbulent time, it was recorded after two concert performances at the Berlin Festival in 1953 during eight sessions at the Jesus Christus Church in suburban Dahlem, famous for its acoustics."
