Produced by Chris Thomas, to my ears 1972's "Gone In the Morning" was a more consistent and enjoyable collection than Quiver's debut.   Once again   singe/rmulti-instrumentalist Cal Batchelor was responsible for the majority of the ten racks.   Guitarist Tim Renwick contributed the ballad 'Green Tree' while the band was collectively credited with the instrumental snippet 'Fung-Kee Laundry' and the closing ballad 'Don't Go'.   Exemplified by tracks like the up-beat opener 'Dorset', 'Love/No Boundaries' and 'I Might Stumble', musically the album offered up a mixture of proto-pub rock and English-styled country-rockers.   It may not have been the most original album of the year, but Batchelor's craggy voice and Renwick's stellar chops made virtually every one of these tracks worth hearing.   On the other hand, with the possible exception of the beautiful ballad 'I Know You So Well', the album lacked anything in the way of a stand-out, grab-you-by-throat performance.   It was all professional and enjoyable, but so were a preponderance of other albums.   I will add, I bet they were a killer act in a live forum !    Sales probably weren't helped by the butt ugly Barney Bubbles cover art.
"Gone In the Morning" track listing:
(side 1)
1.) Dorset    (Cal Batchelor) - 3:01    rating: **** stars
Powered by Renwick's crisp guitar, 'Dorset' was a catchy, up-tempo rocker that served as a nice   example of the band's pub-rock flavor.    The song would have made a dandy single.
2.) I Know You So Well    (Cal Batchelor) - 3:03    rating: **** stars
A big, ominous, stark ballad 'I Know You So Well' had one of those melodies that you simply couldn't shake out of your head.   For some reason this one always makes me think of Gary Brooker and Procol Harum.   My pick for the album's best tune.
3.) Green Tree    (Tim Renwick) - 2:34      rating: *** stars
It certainly wasn't Batchelor on vocals, leading me to assume writer Renwick was singing.   If so, the result was a pretty, pastoral acoustic ballad   ...    Yeah, his voice wasn't as instantly appealing as Batchelor's, but it wasn't bad.    Tim Renwick on 12 string guitar and recorder ....   Interestingly Warner Brothers tapped the song as a promo 45 in the UK:
- 1972's 'Green Tree' b/w 'I Might Stumble' (Warner Brothers catalog number K 16165)
4.) Love/No Boundaries    (Cal Batchelor) - 3:37    rating: *** stars
Ah, life is tough on the road ...   In spite of the pedestrian lyrics,   'Love/No Boundaries'   was another tune with commercial potential.   It also featured one of Renwick's best guitar solos.
5.) I Might Stumble    (Cal Batchelor) - 3:30    rating: ** stars
Listening to 'I Might Survive I've got to admit I've never understood English fascination with country music.   About the nicest thing I can say about this one was that it served as a tour-de-force for Renwick who blaed away of Telecaster and banjo.   Thomas provided the rollicking harmonica.   Just not my genre, but I could see dancing to it.
(side 2)
1.) Gone In The Morning    (Tim Renwick - Cal Batchelor) - 9:00    rating: **** stars
Who would have ever expected a London-based band to have such a cool West Coast vibe?   To my ears parts of 'Gone In the Morning' sounded like a mix of Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Byrds, with Poco harmonies thrown in for good effect.    And for a track that extended to almost ten minutes, I have to admit I didn't mind the extended jam sections.   Renwick was stunning on the tune.
2.) Fung-Kee Laundry (instrumental)    (Tim Renwick - Cal Batchelor - John Willie Wilson - Bruce Thomas) - 0:55    rating: ** stars
More of a song fragment that a true song, 'Fung Kee Laundrry' combined some good time banjo with laundry sound effects.    Mildly cute, it unncessary.
3.) She's A Lady    (Cal Batchelor) - 3:05    rating: *** stars
Another pretty, country-tinged ballad with an odd reggae rhythm buried in the mix.
4.) Don't Let Go    (Tim Renwick
