With so many bands these days these days trying to be "Hardcore" and straining to sound angry, it's refreshing to come across those acts who not only seem sincere, but who actually have something constructive and original to say. Texas' Society's Finest is one of those bands. They fall into the same category as groups like Cave-In and Dillinger Escape Plan, bands who come at Metal from a short-haired, Hardcore Punk perspective, bringing progressive songwriting approaches and, in SF's case, a feeling of sensitivity beneath the rage. After all, how many Metal bands will admit to liking Radiohead or the Smiths? Another of the band's distinguishing qualities is that, for all their aggression and technical aptitude, they give their music space to breathe; it almost feels effortless at points. While it obviously isn't, as frontman John Ashworth's tormented vocals readily attest, you get the impression that they know why they're screaming, and it's not simply because everyone else is.
