Shoegaze Music

Shoegazing music (or as it is just called shoegaze music) is form of alternative rock that came from southern England in the late 1980s. Shoegaze bands like My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive are two bands that are said to have been defining shoegaze artists. Though with artists closely related to the genre,it is claimed that more rhythm based and hypnotic bands like Loop are the true pioneers of shoegaze music.

What is Shoegaze or Shoegazing Music?

Shoegazing music is best described as introspective, self-deprecating music with a non-confrontational feel. Most often you will find on shoegaze cds and records filled with distortion from the fuzzbox, walls of sounds and droning riffs from the noisy guitars. Guitar effects are typically from two distorted rhythms interwoven together giving an exceptional muddied sound. Many times lead guitar riffs are present, though they are not the central focus on most shoegazing cds and shoegaze records. Vocals on shoegaze music are typically subdued in volume and tone, but below the walls of guitars there is a very strong melody. Often times shoegazing bands use drum machines, but many times bands such as Pale Saints, Lush, Moose and Chapterhouse utilized both drum samples and living drumming. The name "Shoegaze" was originally coined by the New Musical Express who noticed that bands guitarists often stared at their feet (or the effect pedals) while in a deep train of thought while playing their music. Also many of the shoegaze band members were shy and young and their sudued vocals were not only just for subdued effect, but also due to their lack of confidence as singers.

Shoegaze Music Influences

The Velvet Underground is often named as a major influence on the shogazing music genre. Although many bands from the Punk genre as bands such as The Cramps, Pere Ubu and The Birthday Party proved influential with early artists in the shoegaze music movement, but artists such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins, Spiritualized, Spaceman 3 are often thought of as artists that gave birth directly to the genre.

The Second Wave of Shoegaze Music and Shoegaze Bands

After the first wave of shoegaze bands whose careers ended in the early 1990s a number of bands such as Bethany Curve and Brian Jonestown Massacre took inspiration from the earlier shoegaze artists and tried to attract new audiences. Off times these new shoegaze bands are referred to as "nu-gazing". Bands in this realm are: Televise, Air Formation, Scarling, Autolux, Mean Red Spiders , Airiel , Amusement Parks on Fire, Skywave, The Radio Dept, Mahogany, Readymade, Morella's Forest, Highspire, Joy Zipper, M83, Ulrich Schnauss, Starflyer 59, Serena Maneesh and Sigur Ros.

Shoegaze Record Labels

The main record labels associated with Shoegaze music artists and also dreampop or dream pop music which is often times closed related are the record labels Creation Records (which brought My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Slowdive, Swervedriver) and 4AD which brought bands like Lush and Cocteau Twins.
