Review You might remember Chris Perez in the Selena biopic as played by Jon Seda; he was her moody, hard-driving guitar-player boyfriend who didn't quite fit into Los Dinos' family-friendly Mexican polka pop. Four years after the Tejana goddess was tragically murdered, Perez re-emerges with this collection of jangly, eclectic Spanglish rock. Energized by Fastball producer Julian Raymond's wall of San Antonio sound and John Garza's earnest vocals, Resurrection lives on the border between country rock, Latin soul and British psychedelia. While there… Read More are times when Perez's sound amounts to a pastiche of Tom Petty and R.E.M., and his guitar style can overindulge in Johnny Winter-like histrionics, the record is held together by keyboardist Joe Ojeda's jazzy Tejano atmospherics and the occasional mariachi horns. That and the fact that Perez was smart enough to cover Love's "Alone Again, Or," a song so steeped in flamenco that it's a classic nugget of the hidden Latin-pop influence on classic rock.
