Review New Zealand's garage-land aren't in the business of reinventing music. They make sparkling singalong pop out of clever, resonant lyrics, all executed with smooth confidence and a dash of alt-rock acidity. They perform intricate juggling tricks with the Ramones' three pet chords, and the intro to "Kiss It All Goodbye" stutters like Nirvana, while thick waves of rising guitars Pixies-fies "Trashcans." For the most part, we are firmly in nice, thoughtful, relentlessly melodic territory here, with tuneful choruses and rueful verses that set clubfuls… Read More of heads a-nodding along. Garageland take their pop from wherever it can be found - swaying Fifties prom ballads for "Good Luck," fuzzy grunge for "What You Gonna Do?" Guitars chime, background vocals soar, and when all the slick fun gets a little wearying, something like "Jean" kicks in full throttle with an opening line worthy of a short story: "Jean, you're the best-looking girl on the street/Do something for me."
