A product of the Erykah Badu and Maxwell jazzy-boho-soul era, Cherokee serves a modishly retro brew of smooth funk, sassy bebop and angular fusion. The comely and fashionable New York singer's debut, I Love You . . . Me, mines her passionate past for juicy autobiographical material: When she isn't exploring a decade-long, emotionally abusive relationship (with a man she calls Auto on her record label's Web site), she's focused on her highly personal turn-ons ("Blue Bottle Afta Shave"), turnoffs ("Misty") and self-help philosophy ("My Own… Read More Queen"). Like a trendy memoir, I Love You . . . Me too often comes off as the musings of a somewhat opportunistic therapy patient -- confessing the titillating surface details but never revealing anything deep enough for true insight. (RS 814)
