Review On their fourth full-length (but first U.S.) release, Sydney, Australia's Bluebottle Kiss make lush, brooding pop that flirts with cacophony. The opening acoustic guitar and piano chords barely hint at the forthcoming swings from sweetness to dissonance and back again. From the sweeping jangle of "Ounce of Your Cruelty" to the Spaghetti-Westernized verses of "Gangersterland," from the touch of Big Star in "Hasten the Blows" to the harp freakout on "Hello Stranger," Revenge Is Slow is anything but predictable. Moody pedal steel and liberal… Read More use of whammy bar-string bending add atmospherics. Frontman (and producer) Jamie Hutchings' vocals quaver and break, conveying his cinematic vision with just the right amount of sentiment. With the soul-punch of the Afghan Whigs, the melodicism of the Church and Wilco's penchant for musical expansion, Bluebottle Kiss borrow widely but forge a sound that's all their own.
