Carawan is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and ethnomusicologist who has recorded numerous albums of American Traditional Folk music, from Appalachian fiddle songs to spirituals. He is widely credited with introducing the song "We Shall Overcome" to the civil rights movement in the early 1960s.
