From the 1920s on, Coleman's swinging style and rhapsodic tone could be heard soloing with classic groups like the Benny Carter, Willie Lewis and Teddy Hill Orchestras. His sound on the trumpet was consistently smooth, and is backed by exceptional players such as Django Reinhardt.
