Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Briggan Krauss. As the alto saxophonist for the cosmic bar-band Myth Science, Krauss pushed jazz music to new heights of both trance-inducing drone and eyebrow-raising histrionics. Now, he's off doing his own thing in his typical lunatic style. His playing will sometimes make you believe he's channeling Eric Dolphy; at other times, you'll wonder who let the gaggle of geese into the room. Krauss's solo work pits his caustic, percussive sax against a funky, off-kilter drumbeat and squiggly lead synthesizer. Possessing an enormous range and an uncanny sense of rhythm, Krauss chooses to become part of the groove rather than ride atop it. His playing alternates between low-register honks and precisely placed squeaks. Meanwhile, the synth starts out on a minimal, arpeggiated riff and swells to a feverish buzzing. It's playful, entertaining fare for avant-gardists who like their jazz with a humorous, Postmodern edge.
