This perennial cult favorite has churned out more than ten releases since the late 1980s, all for various independent American and European labels. Paul K is almost as well known for his shambling wreck of a hard-knock life (drug addiction, jail time, homelessness) as he is for his music. Even without the myth of excess surrounding him, his convincing body of work stands out. Taking the frantic guitar primitivism of Crazy Horse and the Velvet Underground, Paul K's twisting, literary narratives show the influence of the Beat poets, as well as that of classic, under-appreciated songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt. He has often been called a bluesman, and although his music sounds nothing like that of Muddy Waters or Howlin' Wolf, it's clear that his creaky rasp of a voice, visceral guitar playing, and near-desperate delivery are infused with the unmistakable spirit of the blues.
