During the '60s Pianist LaMont Johnson appeared on LPs by Jackie McLean and Hank Mobley. His own more recent albums fall into a similiarly bluesy and muscular Hard Bop category. He sometimes incorporates modal ideas, always with a pronounced emphasis on rhythm.
