Howes has a fuller tone than most other jazz violinists, resulting in fine Hard Bop recordings filled with a rich improvisational style. His more recent songs are well-composed and soulful -- many were written while he was a convict at an Ohio prison, a circumstance which led him to re-evaluate his life and focus on his playing.
