| Spirea X founder Jim Beattie was a key member of the Scottish Jangle Pop collective in the mid-1980s. As a founding member of Primal Scream, he added multitracked 12-string guitar to early indie classics like "All Fall Down" and "Velocity Girl." Fellow Spirea X member Judith Boyle was also around to assist with the violin work. Beattie left the band after their first record and reemerged with Spirea X in 1991, taking the name from an early Primal Scream B-side. Fusing a love of jangling '60s pop and dance music, the band signed to the 4AD label. Their sunnier, harmony-laden, guitar-based tracks worked the best, a fact that must not have gone unnoticed by the band. With only one album under their belt, the band folded. Both Jim Beattie and Judith Boyle would go on to further their exploration of the Beach Boys/Love sound with Adventures in Stereo. Find Spirea X cds and Spirea X records on 4AD Records. |
