Boris Grebenshikov Records, CDs and CD Singles
| Boris Grebenshikov is one of the major figures in the history of Russian rock music. His band Akvarium (Aquarium) have been at it in one form or another since the early 1970s, not only making innovative and at times subversive music, but also selling albums in the millions. In 1989, the Bob Dylan-influenced singer-songwriter became the first Soviet Union citizen to land a record contract in America when he signed with Columbia. Unfortunately, the resulting album Radio Silence misrepresents his work on the whole: most of the lyrics are in English, and the New Wave-leaning production (by Eurythmics' Dave Stewart) is dated and excessively slick. That album still has its moments, but those in search of Grebenshikov's more distinguished moments -- of which there are many -- would be better off seeking out some of the (admittedly difficult-to-find) Aquarium recordings, especially those from the early/middle '80s era. |
