On Infected, this Englishman takes on the big topics, from STDs to American cultural imperialism, and sets them to a humongous sound. Johnson searches for musical correlatives to his wordy observations and arrives at eclectic orchestrations of symphonic excess. But with few notes at his vocal disposal, Johnson does with inflection what more-gifted singers accomplish with range. And his storytelling talent makes many of his songwriting contemporaries look like underachievers. This kind of ambition can work two ways. On the one hand, the bravura arrangements can't compensate for hooks that sometimes never Read More come, and each side closer tries too hard to climax.
